Spring has finally sprung, I hope, in the midwest. To celebrate, we made some egg carton flowers. This was the perfect project to use up the cartons left over from all those dyed Easter eggs, and the perfect reminder of Springtime.
You know that I love the low prep, low mess projects and this is one of them! Chances are you already have most everything you need; some acrylic paint, cardboard egg cartons, paint brushes, scissors, and straws.
Before you start to paint there is one small prep step, cut off a four cube section for your flower. I trimmed around the edges some to make it more rounded and clean-looking. Then, you’re ready to paint!
I let them pick four colors they wanted their flower to be and used a paper plate for a paint tray. I love the Apple Barrel brand, but you can use your favorite. If you have littles that aren’t ready for paint, you can also use markers on this. It doesn’t show up as brightly as the paint does, but it keeps the youngest kiddos included in the project.
After a lot of hard work from my artists, it was time to let them dry. We took this time to make a vase for our flowers. My daughter had an Earth Day homework assignment to take something around home and turn it into something else, so this project pulled double duty and turned into the homework assignment.
We used an old sour cream container for our vase. By trimming the edge of some card stock with fancy scissors and glueing it onto the container we had a vase! If you don’t have any scissors that cut different designs, get some. My girls use them all the time to “fancy up” almost all their projects! I happen to have some floral foam from an old project so we stuck that in the bottom for a base to stick our flowers into.
Once the paint was dry, we glued a pipe cleaner onto the back of the flower for the stem. Quickly, we learned that pipe cleaners were not strong enough to hold up the egg carton, but by sticking the pipe cleaner into a straw we solved that problem. Straws are another multi purpose item to have on hand, and the straw stuck into the floral foam perfectly for a nice little boutique!
These egg carton flowers were the perfect way to welcome Spring or would make a cute homemade Mother’s Day bouquet!
What mom doesn’t love getting flowers?
